Citizen Science as a Path for Sustaining Healthy Waterbodies

Foz do Iguaçu (PR)

Abstract: Lakes, streams & wetlands are widely ignored by scientists, the public, and decision-makers. Yet, like the smallest blood vessels of an organism’s body, these headwaters are critically important for the healthy functioning and structuring of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Climate change, land use intensification, and water withdrawals create a perfect storm for fragmenting and degrading those small waters—despite their importance to unique, endemic biota and for providing ecosystem services to humans (e.g., flood, drought, & disease mitigation, fisheries, wildlife viewing). It is critically important for scientists to engage not only other scientists—but the public as well. We must assist public school students and teachers in monitoring and assessing water quality and biota, including discussing the results with local decision-makers (private companies and local governments). Engaging school youths is a seed for citizen-science growth and effectiveness. Simplified quantitative field protocols and GoPro filming of reference & impaired streams provide pertinent and appropriate information for communicating with decision-makers. Engaging citizen groups regarding the human health and economic benefits of stream rehabilitation provides information on the ecosystem services offered by healthy streams and riparian communities. With the assistance of our coauthors, we will present global research examples of the values and threats to those aquatic ecosystems together with alternatives for communicating that information to the public and decision-makers.

Seagrass monitoring at Wave Break Island 1+2

Wave Break Island (Australia)

De 22 Mar até 22 Mar, 2024
Join our Ocean Connect marine science team on their fortnightly seagrass survey to actively monitor the status and trends in seagrass conditions around the Gold Coast. This event will be held at Wave Break Island, we will be meeting at the Marine Parade to board a small vessel to travel to Wavebreak island seagrass meadows. Seagrasses are a habitat forming species and they play a critical role in the equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. They provide many key ecosystem services, such as providing a nursery and habitat for animals, preventing coastal erosion and sequestering a large amount of carbon dioxide. 7 species occur in the Gold Coast region and cover an estimated 22% of the Broadwater. It is crucial to monitor these change in order to be able to mitigate widespread loss . Ultimately by protecting the seagrass meadows the wider Gold Coast community will indirectly benefit from the sustained water quality in the Gold Coast Broadwater and surrounding region, ultimately, enhancing recreational fishing, marine tourism and providing the right framework for future generations to enjoy. Participants will be trained in internationally standardized and recognized Seagrass-Watch training and will be briefed on seagrasses ecology, importance and threats before the session. The ongoing monitoring is supported by the City of Gold Coast Catchment and Citizen Science Grant program. This workshop is only suitable for adults over the 16 years of age in order to maintain scientific rigor and safety. This is an outdoor event. Everyone attending must register as spots are limited.

Newham Citizen Science Fair

University of East London (Reino Unido)
07:00
De 17 Fev até 17 Fev, 2024
We’re organising a Citizen’s tech event at the University of East London, Stratford, Water Lane on Saturday February 17th 2024. That’s tech made by citizen’s and/or that will help citizens. Currently there’s emphasis on Raspberry Pis, VR, AI and ecology. There’s a larger space for demonstrations, accessible via stairs and lift and a smaller space downstairs for talks, including AI bias and use of AI in healthcare. Lightning, 5 minute talks at the end too. There are Pi based projects, other computer projects, Arduino and Wemo, and (tbc) virtual reality, 3d printing, programming with Scratch, electricity from fruit and veg, and other delights.

Citizen Science EcoAction Day

Crandon Park, Miami (EUA)
09:30
De 09 Dez até 09 Dez, 2023
Jon Miami EcoAdventures & local non-profit Debris Free Oceans for our monthly Citizen Science project activity, hosted at Crandon Park every 2nd Saturday. Citizen Science is a way for the general public to be directly involved in the process of scientific data collection and to be engaged in scientific thinking. The goal of this activity is to have volunteers become amateur scientists while working with a group of professional scientists to collect critical data on marine debris in our local environment. Responsibilities and Duties: • Cleaning up the beach. • Sorting marine debris collected • Gathering and recording data. Qualifications: Volunteers under 13 must participate with a parent/guardian present. Please brIng a refillable water bottle, closed-toed shoes, and protection from the sun (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses).

Workshop: legal issues regarding citizen generated data for the water domain

Online
10:00
De 27 Nov até 27 Nov, 2023
Join OTTERS for a workshop on legal issues around citizen science The OTTERS project promotes societal transformation for marine and freshwater stewardship through scaling up citizen science. Join for an online workshop on 27 November, 14:00-15:30 (CET), to discuss legal issues around water-based citizen science and engagement, including data protection, cross-border considerations, and compliance. The event will include presentations from Professor Georgios Sylaois (Democritus University of Thrace, Greece), DG MARE / Digital Twin Ocean and more, followed by a co-creation workshop to define legal recommendations. If you are interested in practical legal considerations in citizen science projects, register now. The OTTERS project promotes societal transformation for marine and freshwater stewardship through scaling up citizen science, and supports the coordination of citizen science initiatives focused on water. This workshop focuses on legal issues around water-based citizen science and engagement (including GDPR and citizens’ privacy). Key topics of discussion will be: ● Data protection and privacy risks and challenges, with respect to marine and freshwater related citizen science piloting. ● Autonomy, dignity, informed consent, trust, asymmetries of power, fairness, gendered innovation, equity and direct or indirect discrimination. ● The cross-border character of the OTTERS project. ● Applicable or emerging legislation and anticipatory compliance requirements.
